Discovered this little gem today close to the ruins of the original Château de Budos. It was built in the 17th Century as an Ice Store for the Château and is known as ‘La Chinoise’ (Don’t know why!) – Later used as a shelter and store for the workers in the vineyards.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to research this post. To find a stone building in the middle of the vine was built as an Ice House and that it was called ‘La Chinoise’ was fascinating and puzzling. Now, with your help, it makes some kind of sense.

In the last one, the stern castle looks like it’s ordering the vines to straighten up and pay attention.
I really like the top picture. The threatening clouds floating over a very sturdy stone structure that seems to be saying “I’ve seen it all and nothing frightens me” them. The rough stone contrasts nicely against the sky

….my guess is that the name ‘la chinois’ comes from its conical-shaped top. A French strainer used in cooking –http://www.recipetips.com/glossary-term/t–36182/chinois.asp– is called a chinois due to its loose resemblance to what the French deemed a Chinese peasant’s hat–i.e. shaped like a cone. Beautiful beautiful photographs!
