Bonjour Yvonne,
His Canoe had capsized and he went Under for about 15 seconds before he scrambled for the bank. He must have had a severe shock as the water was sub-zero.

I think he was getting out as fast as he could after his canoe capsized. The water must have been very,very cold as the ambient air temperature was -2 degrees.
